This is an entry-level course with no formal prerequisites. You should have a genuine interest in working with children and families. Basic literacy and numeracy skills are beneficial. Some study modes may require access to a computer and internet connection for online components. You will need to undertake 160 hours of vocational placement in an approved early childhood setting as part of the course requirements.
The course is structured around core competency units covering essential early childhood education practices. You will learn to support inclusion and diversity, promote children's health and safety, and nurture babies and toddlers from birth to 23 months. The curriculum includes developing positive relationships with children, applying approved learning frameworks, and supporting holistic child development across physical, social, emotional, cognitive and communication domains. You will gain skills in creating play and learning experiences, connecting children with nature, and observing children to inform practice. Additional focus areas include understanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, meeting legal and ethical obligations, and responding to children at risk. First aid, workplace health and safety, and food safety practices are also integrated throughout.
