This entry-level Certificate II in Horticulture equips you with practical skills to work as a horticultural assistant, garden labourer, or nursery labourer. Through hands-on training with industry-standard equipment, you'll learn plant identification, weed treatment, landscape construction, and propagation techniques in a growing field with stable employment prospects.
You must be employed to enrol as an apprentice or trainee with TAFE Queensland. You'll be invited to complete a Skills Check assessment following your application, which evaluates your current abilities in English, Maths, and Digital Technology. Recommended benchmark levels are 2 in English, 2 in Maths, and 2 in Digital Technology. Your employer must be able to provide necessary human and physical resources to qualify for a traineeship.
Core units include: Operate basic machinery and equipment, Recognise plants, Plant trees and shrubs, Treat weeds, Treat plant pests/diseases/disorders, Assist with soil or growing media sampling and testing, Participate in workplace health and safety processes, and Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices. Elective units cover: Apply chemicals under supervision, Transport and store chemicals, Prepare and apply chemicals, Maintain properties and structures, Assist with low volume irrigation operations, Assist with landscape construction work, Construct low-profile timber or modular retaining walls, Lay paving, Undertake operational maintenance of machinery, Pot up plants, Care for nursery plants, Undertake propagation activities, Prepare and maintain plant displays, Prune shrubs and small trees, Support turf establishment, Observe and report on weather, Work effectively in industry, Maintain chainsaws, Trim and cut felled trees, and Shift materials safely using manual handling methods.
